Our Founders
Our Founders Philip and Judy Green
Over twenty-five years ago, a young English couple visited Mbekweni, a township outside Paarl. They were immediately struck by the appalling poverty, the massive under-investment in education and the sense of hopelessness in so many young people. They were determined to try to make a difference, however modest, in projects prioritised by the local community.
Having been introduced to the Nompumelelo Educare Centre by a local Christian charity, they decided to invest in its facilities and staff to provide a dramatically improved level of Educare.
By 2008, together with Phil Bland, they had established Hope Through Action as the vehicle for their work in the townships. Today, Hope Through Action has three Sports and Education centres, plus the original inspiration, Educare Centre.

- Community Sports and Education Centres provide a range of programmes, including leadership development, life skills, team development and skills training, implemented by our partners, SCORE. Besides creating a safe space for youth development through sport, there is a range of additional activities for all ages, including a sewing/knitting club, aerobics, a gym and counselling services.
- The inclusion of Learning and Resource Centres allows for structured digital educational and play activities, as well as homework assistance, reading groups, online research for school projects and preparation of CVs. The Learning Centres provide a platform to develop relevant ICT skills for success in the rapidly evolving technological world.
- Our Centres also form the Leadership hub for our WCED@HomeLearning programme run in collaboration with 14 Implementing Partners, Western Cape Government, YearBeyond and the Val de Vie Foundation. Hope Through Action, in partnership with SCORE, is the LEAD partner for this programme that spans the entire Western Cape.
Our communities face many challenges, including social, economic and spiritual. Hope Through Action, through our Centres and proven programmes, provides development options for all, effectively converting these challenges into growth opportunities to ensure a better future.
Key facts:
- Focus on core skills to support the development of children and young people.
- Working in township communities in the Western Cape.
- Almost 23,000 participant interactions per month.
- Invested over R132m (£5.7 at current prices).
- Over 70 people are financially dependent on HTA activities.
