Creating a Space to Read, Belong and Grow: A Volunteer’s Impact

What happens when someone steps into a space with energy, care, and a genuine love for learning?

Originally from the UK, Lindsey Abbott – a former school principal – chose to give back after stepping away from her role. During her time at one of our centres, she brought energy, care and a genuine love for learning, helping to transform the library into a vibrant space where young people feel encouraged to read, explore and belong.

The library was reorganised to better serve learners, with outdated materials removed and new reading resources introduced. What was once just a space became more intentional – a place where learners are excited to gather and engage.

But the real impact has been in the interactions.

Working alongside the team, Lindsey supported the assessment of learners’ reading levels, helping to understand where each child is and how best to support their growth. Structured sessions followed, beginning with shared storytelling and moving into guided reading. Learners quickly engaged – not only reading themselves, but supporting one another along the way.
